Triethanolamine (TEA) is a colorless transparent viscous liquid with hygroscopicity and an ammonia smell, composed of a tertiary amine bearing three hydroxyethyl groups. It is used to make surfactants in industrial and cosmetics as a pH adjuster for skin and hair conditioning products as well as sun screen lotions, liquid laundry detergents, polishes, and paints, valued for its dual amine-alcohol functionality, emulsifying power, and pH-buffering capability.
